Warner Bros’ massive Harry Potter RPG Hogwarts Legacy is finally out, offering fans a cutting-edge Wizarding World game. One fan has decided to strip away the game’s gorgeous visuals for pure retro style with an adorable Hogwarts Legacy PS1 demake.
Created by YouTuber Jackarte, the Hogwarts Legacy PS1 Demake trailer shows what the new Harry Potter game would look like if it released in 1999. A shot-for-shot remake of one of the games’ real trailers, it shows just how far we’ve come in just a couple of decades.
Jackarte’s demake is a gloriously archaic reconstruction of the new spotter game. The game’s character models are adorably polygonal with photos for faces; lighting is incredibly basic and animations are just as clunky as you’d expect.
Most impressively, every environment in the trailer has been recreated with PS1-quality details. Expensive dungeons filled with little details are now mostly empty with just key assets to decorate them. It just goes to show that not only have graphics exponentially improved since the PS1, but so has asset density.
The cute Hogwarts Legacy PS1 demake is sadly not a real video game. Instead, it’s a basic game created within the 3D game engine Unity. Judging from Jackarte’s slew of other demake projects, it won’t become a full game either.
However, with the new Harry Potter game having an incredibly active modding community, we could see something like this within the game one day. Perhaps, in the future, one modder will create a PS1 graphics mod for the game’s PC version.
In recent days, the modding scene has exploded around the new game. Just days after release and a working Hogwarts Legacy multiplayer mod is already out to test. While not perfect, fans of the series are already turning the game into their dream co-op experience.
The game may have only just released, but fans are already craving more. Unfortunately, no DLC has been announced for the wizard RPG. However, considering the game’s huge success, we could see some expansions releasing in the future.
Hogwarts Legacy is currently available on PS5, Xbox Series X and S and PC. An Xbox One and PS4 version releases on April 3rd. Finally, a Nintendo Switch version will release on July 25th.
