Elden Ring was the title to beat in 2022, becoming a huge seller and garnering perfect scores in reviews. Hogwarts Legacy, however, has now overtaken Elden Ring's lifetime sales.
It has only taken the wizarding world game a mere five months to trounce the entire lifetime sales of Bandai Namco's Elden Ring, and there's no signs of the title slowing down any time soon, as it remains the UK's top-selling game.
We have to bear in mind that Hogwarts Legacy is only out on PC and the new-gen consoles, and it is going to be released on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch later this year. This means we could see sales boost well above the annual best-sellers like Call of Duty, FIFA, GTA 5, and Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
A recent tweet from the official Hogwarts Legacy Twitter account shows that players have already accrued over 406 million hours of playtime, nurtured 674 million plants, brewed 405 million potions, and defeated 2.25 billion dark wizards.
What's most interesting about Hogwarts Legacy's popularity is that it belies the controversy that has surrounded the game. In fact, the game has been so divisive that it caused mass outrage, with streamers being bullied and targeted by those who disagree with Rowling's comments on gender and identity.
Logically, this would suggest that the game might be a flop, but the numbers have obviously shown that even Rowling's comments can't stop the Harry Potter game.
If it continues selling well, we're looking at one of the best-selling games of all time.
