GTA San Andreas stands out as one of the best games in the series, delivering a brilliant story and becoming an iconic experience. Despite the launch of multiple Grand Theft Auto games since then, including the hugely popular GTA V, San Andreas remains a highlight in the long-running franchise.
So, it was no surprise that the VR community was buzzing with excitement when Meta announced it was working with Rockstar Games to develop GTA San Andreas VR to its lineup of the best VR headsets. However, as the best Meta Quest 3 games list continues to grow each year, San Andreas VR is still missing.
Announced in 2021, there’s been no significant news on GTA San Andreas VR since then. However, as reported by Road to VR, a recently deleted comment on Meta’s YouTube channel provides a small update—but it’s not exactly good news.
Replying to user "internetpebble4731" on a recent trailer for another VR game, where the user asked whether there is a release date or if the project has been canceled, the official MetaQuestVR YouTube channel responded: “We don’t have a release date yet, but we’re working on it!”
However, the comment was quickly deleted. Given that it was likely a standard social media employee replying, the comment was probably removed by a manager or someone in charge. This doesn’t bode well for the anticipated GTA San Andreas VR port, especially considering how swiftly the comment was removed.
There are a couple of possibilities. One, the employee commenting likely didn’t know whether the game is still coming, meaning we’re still in the dark about the status of the GTA VR game. Or two, the game has been canceled, and the comment has reignited interest in something that is no longer in development.
In any case, it’s disappointing that there’s been no news in roughly three years. Two Meta Quest 3-exclusive games, Batman Arkham Shadow and Hitman 3 VR, were announced this year and are expected to be released soon. However, as the Quest 3S looms, it seems like GTA San Andreas VR is becoming almost as mythical as the long-rumored Bigfoot said to roam the countryside of the iconic game.
