Formerly a PS5 exclusive, God of War finally made its way onto PC, and promptly became a smash hit on its new platform. And while the majority of players have had no issues, a significant number have encountered the God of War out of memory error.
This pesky issue has been stopping players from getting stuck into this masterpiece. Happily, though, there are some ways to remedy the problem. So without further delay, let's get you sorted, so you can start exploring Midgard.
How To Fix God Of War Out Of Memory Error
There are a couple of suggested solutions for this issue, depending upon whether or not you have a 12th Gen Intel CPU that seems to be responsible for a lot of these errors.
If you do, then disabling the graphics card has enabled lots of players to get past this error. This can work whether you bought the game on Steam or via the Epic Games Store. To disable the graphics card:
- Right-click on the Start icon and select Run.
- In the pop-up box, type devmgmt.msc and click on OK. This will load the Device manager.
- Go to Display Adapters and click on the arrow.
- The graphics card will appear beneath this option. Right-click on the graphics card and select Disable Device.
But for those of you who don't have this specific CPU, or for whom this fix doesn't work, the developers have provided a hot fix. This is available via Steam, and to access it, complete the following steps:
- In your Steam library, right click on God of War and select Properties.
- Select the BETAS tab.
- Change the drop down to experimental.
- This will then download the hot fix.
If you cannot see the 'experimental' option in the drop-down, try restarting the Steam client, and then run through the steps above once again.
If you want to revert back to the default, do this:
- In your Steam library, right click on God of War and select Properties.Ā
- Select the BETAS tab.
- Change the drop down to none.Ā
You can even add your feedback about this hotfix to the discussion page. This will help the developers identify any issues that the hotfix has created, and let them know if it has actually completely resolved the issue or not.
What Is The Out Of Memory Error?
The God of War out of memory problem occurs when players are attempting to start up the game. While the error would suggest it is an issue with people trying to play the game on a PC that isn't powerful enough, this isn't actually the case.
As reported in a blog post on Steam, the developers identified that this happens most frequently to players who have a 12th Gen Intel CPU with integrated graphics. While they haven't been able to provide a fix that is definitive at this point, they have offered a suggested workaround. This is what we've highlighted above.

For most players, this will do the job on an interim basis. As it is a hotfix, the developers are keen to point out that it may lead to other instances of instability. But if you're willing to give it a go, follow the steps we mentioned earlier. It's your best bet for overcoming the issue.
