After years of arguments in various internet chat rooms and forums, Square Enix has told Final Fantasy VII fans how to pronounce Cait Sith. However, this has caused its own problems, since the name’s pronunciation differs from how it’s said in Celtic mythology.
The game’s official Twitter account said that Caith Sith is pronounced as ‘Kate Sihth,’ ending a decades-long debate over how this name is said. However, this has angered and confused many fans of Celtic mythology since it’s pronounced as Ket Shee.
Most fans who played the original FF7 always pronounced it as ‘Kate Sihth,’ since not everyone is aware of the lore in Celtic mythology. Still, we don’t blame Irish or Scottish fans for being confused since Square Enix essentially appropriated the name and didn’t give correct pronunciations for a long time.
Prior to being a character in Final Fantasy VII, Cait Sith was a fairy creature in Celtic mythology. While the creature’s origins can differ from country to country, common knowledge claims it resembles a black cat with a white spot on its chest, can be as big as a dog, and can even steal your soul.
Compare that to Cait Sith in FF7 and things couldn’t be any more different. While the character does have the black cat and white chest part right, it also rides a big cat robot that does combat for it. There are also some more spoiler-related differences but we’ll wait until Rebirth is a few months old.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is Cait Sith’s official introduction to this trilogy, though he did make a quick cameo in Remake. The character attempted to stop the plate from falling but was too late. Now, he will be a playable party member and even has some cool team-up moves.
Sith is only one of the reasons to be excited for Rebirth, as the sequel makes up for the linearity of Remake. It’s also the first PS5 game on two discs, because this title is going to take up a lot of space. Zack Fair is also playable in the sequel, getting his own episode and hopefully wrapping up the meta-narrative from Remake.
