It looks like Final Fantasy 16 is going to divide fans as previews of the game have revealed an inconsistent framerate. This isn’t as simple as the game having frame drops during some of the more intense moments, as it actually switches between 60 FPS and 30 FPS.

YouTuber Maximilian Dood revealed that he played a good six hours of the game on Performance Mode. Normally, that would mean reduced visuals for better performance, but that’s only half the case. When addressing an angry fan about this, he revealed that combat is 60 FPS while exploration is 30 FPS.

On paper, that’s not the worst thing Final Fantasy 16 can do, as it looks like a pretty demanding game all around. We should also point out that this is a preview build of the game, with the final product launching in a better state. That doesn’t mean it will be 60 FPS all around when it comes out next month but there’s always hope.

Still, considering how Square Enix didn’t make performance a huge deal during its time in the press, fans shouldn’t mind this. Although an inconsistent framerate isn’t great, this is still better than that time the Redfall box art promised 60 FPS at launch. Then again, a consistent framerate is far from the worst thing about that Xbox exclusive.

With all that being said, we can understand if some fans are frustrated that Final Fantasy 16 won’t be 60 FPS all the time. Square Enix did say that they couldn’t make the game without the PS5, so seeing this temporary exclusive switch between framerates can be confusing. Perhaps a patch will fix that but we’re just speculating on that.

After a decent wait, fans will be able to get their hands on Final Fantasy 16 on June 22. Currently, we don’t know when the game will be coming to PC, though that’s probably coming out next year.
