Fallout, the long-running post-apocalyptic RPG series, is finally getting a live-action adaptation. But although game publisher Bethesda had at one point entertained a Fallout movie, the project is now heading for the small screen as a streaming series – with some impressive talent behind it.

In July 2020, it was announced that Amazon Studios had licensed the rights to the bestselling game franchise. Producers Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christopher) and Lisa Joy – the married duo behind acclaimed HBO series Westworld – are attached to shepherd the project, which is being developed by their company, Kilter Films. The Fallout series will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

Nolan and Joy declared Fallout as "one of the greatest game series of all time" and revealed that they were huge fans of the franchise themselves. "Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends," the pair said in a statement. "So we're incredibly excited to partner with…the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life."

Fallout TV series plot

There are no concrete details on the TV show's story just yet. We do know that, like the games, it will be set in a post-apocalyptic future, where the world has been ravaged by nuclear war. The United States has been turned into a radioactive wasteland in which people live in underground fallout shelters known as 'Vaults'. Warring factions of survivors and mutated wildlife are just some of the dangers that the show's protagonists will likely face.

As the project's announcement puts it: "The world of Fallout is one where the future envisioned by Americans in the late 1940s explodes upon itself through a nuclear war in 2077. The magic of the Fallout world is the harshness of the wasteland set against the previous generation’s utopian idea of a better world through nuclear energy. It is serious and harsh in tone, yet sprinkled with moments of ironic humour and B-movie-nuclear-fantasies."

However, actor and Fallout veteran Ron Perlman has said that he would want to reprise his role as a narrator for any live-action adaptation. The Hellboy and Sons Of Anarchy star has lent his distinctive gruff tones to seven Fallout games in total, stretching all the way back to the 1997 original.

Fallout TV series trailer

Seeing as the show is still in the very early stages of development, we wouldn't expect a trailer for a while – the cameras haven't even started filming yet. However, Amazon and Bethesda did release this neat little teaser via the Fallout Twitter account…

Fallout TV series release date

The show hasn't yet started filming, having only been commissioned by Amazon in summer 2020. Given the huge amount of work needed to put a show like this together – and amid the current Covid restrictions, too – it's likely we won't see the Fallout TV show premiere until 2022.
