The sad news of the death of 54 year old actor Matthew Perry definitely took us all by surprise. While many people all around the world remember the actor for his role as Chandler Bing in the classic series Friends, in the gaming world he is remembered for something else, his role as Benny in Fallout New Vegas.
Matthew Perry was found dead on October 28 in his home in Los Angeles. At first, the cause of death was reported as drowning, since he was found in his jacuzzi, but the police is still investigating. At the moment, following the post-mortem report, the cause of death has been "deferred" pending toxicology tests. While the actor did have issues with drugs in the past, sources close to the police mention having found only prescription drugs.
Along with his work on Friends as Chandler Bing, Matthew Perry was a huge Fallout 3 fan. So much so that in an episode of the Ellen show, he gifted an autographed copy of the game to the host. Indeed, Matthew was one of us and that is how his role as Benny came about.
The Fallout New Vegas community has come together to remember the actor after his passing. Several posts on X mention the actor and his work in the role, such as "the best well-dressed villain in Fallout" and "I'll always remember him as Benny".
Fans also say no other actor could voice the character, as Perry was "the perfect voice for Benny". Also, in the Making of Fallout New Vegas documentary, we can see Perry in the voice booth, describing his role and his deep appreciation for Fallout 3.
While the world mourns him by preparing for never-ending marathons of Friends episodes, we will be diving back into New Vegas and go find Benny. We will always be remembering a great actor and gamer.
