Discord Is Flirting With NFTs, The Internet Is Reacting

As seems to be the case at the moment, yet another company has announced that they're looking into the idea of NFTs and cryptocurrencies. This time around though, it's caused a bit more of a fuss because it's an app that many of us use daily.

We are, of course, talking about Discord. For those who don't know, Discord is a chat app that millions of users utilise to create their own friendly chat groups. It's not just personal though, as plenty of people also use it to host their own servers filled with the viewers of their streams, or a variety of other communities for plenty of other reasons. Well, the owner recently tweeted out an image showing that there aims to be a connection with the app and both MetaMask, and WalletConnect.

What are MetaMask and WalletConnect

WalletConnect is a "convenient open-source tool that enables a mobile wallet to easily connect to decentralized web applications, and interact with them from your phone. It is a more secure way to use Dapps than desktop or browser-based wallets such as MetaMask."

MetaMask, on the other hand, allows users to store and manage account keys, along with broadcasting transactions, and also lets them send and receive Ethereum-based cryptocurrencies and tokens. It connects with other apps, such as WalletConnect, and is meant to be a safe way for users to keep track of all of this stuff using a mobile app or a compatible web browser.

How do people feel about these integrations?

Well, it's mixed. There are, no doubt, plenty of NFT and crypto-fanatics who are incredibly excited to get more credibility thanks to a big platform like Discord budding up to them. That's good for them, hooray, and all that. However, there's also been a lot of people saying they've cancelled their Discord Nitro subscriptions to show how displeased they are with the move.

This is due to the perceived energy and climate crisis that NFTs and certain cryptocurrencies are feeding into. It's only natural that during a time when the climate is very clearly being affected, that so many people would feel as though feeding into them more is a bad idea. There's also a lot of arguments against NFTs specifically for being used as a way to launder money as reported by Coin Telegraph.

They're also being accused of being a scam. There are a fair few reports of this going around, but this one from The Verge covers a lot of the essential details that you'd need to be aware of. In short, the decentralised nature of them and the lack of regulations do mean that they can be sold for whatever they're theoretically worth, but that worth is incredibly easy to manipulate for those that already have money. Anyway, if you're not happy with Discord integrating this stuff, we recommend you let them know.
