Excitement surrounding the Red Dead Redemption re-release from Rockstar Games has quickly died down. Now that details for the Nintendo Switch and PS4 port have been revealed, fans are trashing how barebones this upcoming release truly is.
When this new version was revealed, fans prepared for disappointment as the open-world Western was announced for PS4 and Switch. Soon after, it was revealed that this re-release would cost $50, wouldn’t include any graphical improvements, and axes the original’s beloved online mode. It’s the same game from PS3 and Xbox 360 and even still runs at 30 FPS.
Fans who still have dislikes on their YouTube channels noticed that the trailer has more dislikes than likes. Twitter user @crump_youtube said there were 41,000 dislikes and only 25,000 likes for the game’s announcement trailer.
Needless to say, fans aren’t happy at all with this Red Dead Redemption re-release. Xbox users can still access the 360 version via backwards-compatibility and that still has the online mode, as pointed out by @LegacyKillaHD. The fact this version still isn’t on PC when its sequel is doesn’t help things.
On paper, a straight up port of this Western isn’t the worst idea in the world. It’s one of the better-looking sixth gen games out there and will definitely run well on Switch. Having it on PS4 is also good since that means it will be backwards-compatible with the PS5.
However, it’s hard to justify releasing a 13-year-old game with barely any improvements for $49.99. Some would argue that having the Undead Nightmare expansion softens the blow but the lack of any meaningful improvements still stings.
It’s a shame that this port seems so disappointing since this is still Red Dead Redemption. Many consider this title to be one of Rockstar’s best, which is why rumours of a remaster pumped fans up.
