In a rather bizarre turn of events, DC has cancelled its upcoming Batgirl movie. One of two B-list movies in its lineup, the exciting new film has been axed with very little explanation.
Why was Batgirl cancelled?
Reported by The Wrap, DC has decided not to release its almost-finished Batgirl movie. Despite spending around $90 million on the project, the fully-filmed picture will go unreleased.
A Warner Bros spokesperson explained that the decision to can the film is due to changes in direction. While the film is almost finished, the change in direction for DC and HBO Max means the film will not be released. This is coming from a company that spent hundreds of millions to fix Justice League.
“The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max,” the spokesperson said. “Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future.”
According to insiders at DC, Batgirl’s script could not be converted to a theatrical release movie despite reshoots. While the cast and director are still loved by the studio, the movie’s script was allegedly unsalvageable.

They’ll work again soon
Batgirl was not the only movie on the cutting block. Alongside the release, a sequel to SCOOB!, a $40 million animated feature, was canned as well.
However, the Batman spin-off was by far the biggest picture. Not only did the movie cost $90 million to make, but the film featured the return of Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman, edging out The Flash.
Furthermore, the movie would’ve featured the return of Brendan Frasier as Firefly, a pyromaniac Batman villain. We would’ve watched the movie for that alone.
