Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is expanding the game to greater heights but is also sacrificing some romance to do so. That’s not to say it’s removing romance options but this piece of DLC won’t be adding too many new ones.
Despoina Anetaki, the quest designer for the DLC, told Kotaku that romance won’t play a huge part in the expansion. Since V’s main concern is finding a cure for his predicament with Johnny Silverhand, he’s not exactly looking for love.
While he isn’t looking for romance, there will still be some new romance options in the expansion. Although Anetaki didn’t state who they would be, the designer still feels that it’s “spy thriller” tone is the main focus of the extra content.
“V’s attention is in Dogtown because there is this whole thing about saving yourself through the storyline, but there will be some content like that,” Anetaki said.
Fans were probably hoping for more of everything in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. There are definitely big changes that fundamentally alter the game but romance isn’t one of them. It’s not the worst thing in the world but still a bit of a shame.
Similarly, The Witcher 3 had two expansions and they weren’t huge on romance either. Granted, there were ladies to woo but these adventures were pretty self-contained and didn’t lead into anything more. Compare that to Cyberpunk’s game-altering expansion, it’s clear that story is the major focus.
Romance in CD Projekt Red’s sci-fi RPG is a solid enough experience, with fans enjoying the few partners they can woo. It might not beat the options seen in Mass Effect or Persona but there’s enough to keep players distracted in a fun way. Getting one or two new options in the new expansion is a decent enough addition to what’s already available in the base game.
