Cyberpunk 2077 is about to have its massive 2.0 update in conjunction with the Phantom Liberty expansion, completely reworking perks, combat, and more. While the expansion won’t have any Edgerunners characters in the story, they are referenced in the game’s new perk tree.
Fans on Twitter were quick to notice that David, Lucy, and Rebecca could be seen as icons in the tree. It might not be the Edgerunners sequel many were hoping for but fans are just happy seeing these characters get referenced.
Using these three makes sense since David, Lucy, and Rebecca are the most popular characters from the Edgerunners anime. David and Lucy had a pretty memorable love story, while Rebecca was a fun character who filled that manic pixie void, for better or worse.
This actually isn’t the first time we’ve seen Cyberpunk 2077 reference the acclaimed anime. An update that came out at the same time as the series added some free cosmetics inspired by the show. There was also a short side quest that had Falco contact the players and tell them about David’s journey.
Another fun tribute to the anime comes up when heading to the bar, as players can get a drink called the David Martinez. These drinks are based on characters who are deemed as “legends,” do this is a heartfelt tribute to David.
Edgerunners references aside, Cyberpunk 2077 is going to change everything that fans disliked about the game. As we mentioned, perks are being reworked so they’re easier to understand and more useful. We’ve also seen updates to the combat, as gory Mortal Kombat-style finishers will be added to the game.
