Paradox has confirmed the beta release for Cities Skylines 2 mods support, finally bringing user generated content to the controversial city building simulator.

Developer Colossal Order is finally ready to bring mods to the game, albeit in a beta form. On March 25, 2024, fans will be able to create code and map mods. Unfortunately, asset mods will not be available on launch, but will come later this year.

Cities Skylines 2 mods have been long-awaited by fans, with many upset that mod support has been absent since launch. Following an awful performance profile on release, fans demanded the arrival of mod support.

With this in mind, the mod support that will soon be available is incredibly robust. Over the past year, developer Colossal Order has been working on deep and accessible mod tools for the community to help users create and install external tools more efficiently.

However, with asset mods still months away at the earliest, it looks like Cities Skylines 2 will still have to wait a while before it can even begin to come close to gaining the massive moderation of the original game. Considering the fact that the original Cities Skylines floundered because of its incredible modding community, it’s bizarre to see support take this long.

Alongside the arrival of mod support, Paradox also confirmed the first DLC content for the city building simulator. Originally planned to release last year, Cities Skylines 2’s post-launch content is finally underway.

The new DLC starts with Beach Properties. Set in a new Waterfront Zone, this content drop adds four new trees for scenery as well as beach buildings to create an idyllic little seaside town. It’s a small start, but hopefully it’s the start of a huge slew of post-launch content for the game.

Cities Skylines 2 is currently only available on PC, but console ports are on the way. Just like everything else surrounding the game, these ports have been delayed ad nauseum, but they should be rearing their heads in the near future. Don’t expect a Switch version, though.
