Everyone likes taking photos using their mobile phones. It's quick, convenient, and usually, the results come out pretty well, even if all we are doing is the most basic point and shoot photography.
But if you are an avid Instagram user who wants to attract some new followers with super sharp images, or maybe you just want to enhance some of your photos so you can put them on the wall, then a photo editing tool might just be what you need.
iOS, much like Android, comes with its own editing software, and we'll run through how that works as a starting point. But we'll also highlight a couple of other photo editing apps, which you may find give you more versatility, or ease of use.
Here's what you need to know.
The Photos app on iPhone
As with all in-built photo apps, editing photos and videos is relatively straightforward. Using the Photos app on iOS is no different. This app offers a range of simple options to edit your content. You can adjust light and colour, crop, rotate and flip images and videos. You can straighten images, or adjust perspective. Apply those all important filters, revert an image back to the original, or add annotations.
It's a very simple, user-friendly app which will be more than enough for a lot of people, to produce the quality of photos they need. But what exactly do you need to do?
How to edit pictures on iOS
Using the Photos app is really simple.
- In Photos, start by tapping the image you wish to edit, to view it in full screen.
- Tap Edit, then swipe left under the image to view all the different editing functions.
- Choose an effect, then drag the slider to adjust it. The buttons will indicate which effects have been increased or decreased. You can tap the effect button to compare the image before and after the changes have been made.
- You can then tap Done to save any edits you wish to keep, or Cancel then Discard Changes to, well, discard the changes.
There are loads of other photo editing apps out there as well, for people who want something with a bit more versatility. We'll highlight a couple of options for you to consider.
Other photo editing apps
In addition to the pre-installed Photos app, there are plenty of others you can choose from. One, which is consistently recommended as a great all round app for everyday photo editing, is Snapseed. Designed by Google, Snapseed is completely free, and has a vast range of tools, making it great for both beginners, and more experienced photographers.
It has 29 different tools and filters to make use of, including Healing. This lets you remove unwanted objects from your images. You can also easily improve exposure and sharpness. It also supports JPG and RAW formats.
Another really highly rated photo editing app is called VSCO. This one is particularly strong for its selection of adjustable filters, with over 200 to choose from. It is also free (with an optional subscription fee to access the full range of filters). If you are someone for whom filters are going to be invaluable (hello Instagrammers) then VSCO is definitely worth a look.
So now you know how to edit photos either on the dedicated Photos app on iOS, or, if you feel adventurous, there are a couple of great apps for you to explore. Happy editing!
