Ghost of Tsushima (Sucker Punch)

As one of the last big releases before the PS5 hits town at the end of 2020, Sucker Punch's Japanese stealth game

Ghost of Tsushima

has understandably been getting a lot of attention. Critics and fans absolutely love this game.

Set in 13th-century Japan, the game is a visually stunning, narratively engaging, super fun to play game. It's a great note for the PS4 to go out on, and yet another fantastic exclusive for the blue team.

The Last of Us Part II (Naughty Dog)

The Last of Us Part II

is pretty much the game we've all been waiting for on PS4. Ever since we witnessed the tragic ending to the first game, the question of how Naughty Dog would deliver a sequel has been on our minds.

And while players have been split on the game's story, this is still

the

must-play game on the console. Make sure you pick up

The Last of Us Remastered

first, if you're yet to complete the original game.

Red Dead Redemption 2 (Rockstar)

If you've ever played a PlayStation console, then you know Rockstar as the developer of

Grand Theft Auto

, basically the best-selling modern game franchise. But their 'other' massive series right now is

Red Dead

, which made its name on the PS3 with

Red Dead Redemption

.

This, the third game in the series, is the highest-rated PS4 title on Metacritic right now, so of course you have to check it out. It's a sprawling open-world with a deep storyline and incredible gameplay - exactly what you'd expect from Rockstar, basically.

God of War (SIE Santa Monica)

Current Metascore

God of War

was one of the most cherished first-party series to be released on PS2. So when Sony's Santa Monica Studio announced it would be rebooting the title on PS4, everyone understandably got a bit excited.

The hype turned out to be well-founded, as the 2018

God of War

reboot blew critics and fans away. The game has an amazing story, brilliant use of Norse mythology, top graphics and sound, and excellent

meme potential

.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (Naughty Dog)

Current Metascore

Console 'mascots' are a thing of the past, but the best shout for PS3 cover star was Nathan Drake. The

Uncharted

trilogy was the console's biggest selling point, a perfect series of cinematic story adventure games.

When a fourth game was announced, reaction varied from complete and utter hype to trepidation about potentially ruining the series' track record. But this is Naughty Dog, and they don't tend to make mistakes.

A Thief's End

is yet another perfect game from a developer on absolute fire right now.

Pick up

The Uncharted Collection

if you somehow missed the first three games.

Resident Evil 2 (Capcom)

The current console generation has been defined (or plagued, if for some reason you hate nostalgia) by remakes. Everything from

Call of Duty

to

Streets of Rage

has seen a remake or reimagining, with PS4 arguably the best console for the niche.

Undoubtedly the best PS4 remake is that of Capcom's landmark survival-horror title

Resident Evil 2

. This series stagnated a bit in recent years, before

RE7: Biohazard

got some of the best reviews of the series and jumpstarted the franchise.

Both

RE2

and the remake of

RE3

are incredible, so check 'em out!

Final Fantasy VII Remake (Square Enix)

Current Metascore

Final Fantasy VII

was one of the biggest games of all-time on PS1. Then they announced a PS2 remake, which never came. Then in 2005, a PS3 tech demo showed off the iconic intro to the game in the new console's engine. Then we waited for ten years.

When the remake was finally announced, fans looked on in awe at the 1997 title brought to new life. Since then, gamers and critics alike have praised the game to no end, with a current Metacritic score of 87 and user rating of 8.0.

If you ever played the original, or just want to see a JRPG done right, then you need

Final Fantasy VII Remake

in your life.

DOOM Eternal (id Software)

Current Metascore

Doom

, the original first-person shooter, has made a comeback in a massive way in recent years, with the

2016 series reboot

kickstarting the Doom Slayer's story again.

Doom Eternal

is a direct sequel to that game, and builds upon the title's addictive, indulgent fun with more enemies, more features and more settings. There's not much to say about this - you know

Doom

, and this is another bloody (literally) brilliant entry in the franchise.

Shadow of the Colossus (Bluepoint)

Current Metascore

The original

Shadow of the Colossus

on PS2 was one of the most critically acclaimed releases in gaming of the 2000s. Developed by Team Ico, it was a beautifully designed game in which you take down epic beasts in a sprawling, empty landscape. It's a bloody masterpiece.

The PS4 remake took that formula to new heights. Many said the minimalistic style of the game wouldn't work with new audiences, but how wrong they were.

Shadow of the Colossus

will always be remembered as one of the best PlayStation creations ever, and you owe it to yourself to experience it on PS4.

Dreams (Media Molecule)

Current Metascore

Guildford-based Sony-exclusive developer Media Molecule took a break from

LittleBigPlanet

for a few years to give us

Dreams

in 2020.

This creative game followed in the footsteps of the likes of

Roblox

and

Super Mario Maker

, giving players the freedom to create their own games with a massive array of tools and tech.

You can create pretty much anything you put your mind to, if you have the time, and the community has produced everything from a working remake of

Fallout 4

to a horror game inspired by

Seinfeld

. Amazing.

Marvel's Spider-Man (Insomniac)

Talk about a series rejuvenation!

Spider-Man

games were a bit dire for a long time, but

Marvel's Spider-Man

on PS4 completely changed that.

Combining all the things we used to love about the webhead's games on PS2 - web swinging, intuitive combat and freedom - the PS4 series reboot is just pure fun all the time. The story is great fun, too. No wonder

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

was one of the first games shown at the recent PS5 reveal.

Rocket League (Psyonix)

Current Metascore

Admit it: You've always wanted to play football in cars. Ever since

Top Gear

showed a few games of car-football back in the day, it's been the dream of everyone with a passing interest in gaming or footy.

Rocket League

is the beautiful realisation of that dream. Yes it's been around for bloody years now (we first played the beta back in 2015), but if you're looking for the best current-gen game to pick up and play, then you can't do much better than this.
