Assassin's Creed TV series heading to Netflix: The first teaser trailer is here, but the cast and release date remain a mystery

An Assassin's Creed Netflix series is officially on the way, with the iconic streaming service teaming up with Ubisoft to bring the project to life. In fact, it sounds like they're going to make more than one show!

As Netflix's official press release explains: "Under the agreement, Netflix and Ubisoft will tap into the iconic video game’s trove of dynamic stories with global mass appeal for adaptations of live action, animated, and anime series."

According to said press bumf, "The first series in development is slated to be an epic, genre-bending live action adaptation" of the gaming franchise.

“For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise,” said Ubisoft's Jason Altman in a statement. “We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”

Netflix's Peter Friedlander added: “From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”

Assassin's Creed Netflix series cast and showrunner - is Michael Fassbender involved?

All we know about the Assassin's Creed Netflix show's crew, right now, is that Ubisoft's Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik will serve as executive producers.

There's no word yet on whether Justin Kurzel (who directed the 2016 movie adaptation of the games) or Michael Fassbender (who starred in that film) are involved, but we'd be surprised if they were.

The press release mentions that "a search is currently underway for a showrunner", so it sounds like this Assassin's Creed Netflix series is in a very early stage of planning.

Assassin's Creed Netflix series release date

As for a release date, your guess is as good as ours as to when this Assassin's Creed series will debut on Netflix.

If we had to guess, though, we'd probably be a little cautious about it: with a lot of the world still under restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we'd be surprised if this show could make it all the way through production and onto our screens before 2022.
