Another year, another announcement of AMD's laptop variant of CPU's. While last year they announced 'Zen 2' for laptops, 'Zen 3' has now arrived to succeed it.
At CES 2021 this week, the company announced thirteen new models, split in a H-Series and U-Series.
Now that AMD have brought out the desktop CPU and GPU models, laptop users are curious to see how the new mobile chips will compare.
With that, here's what the new 'Zen 3' CPU's improve upon last year's models.
Ryzen 5000 H & U Series
The H Series is meant for gaming and content creation; so if you're a YouTuber, these chips are for you.
The U Series is meant for ultraportable laptops, so if you use one for work and light gaming, this chip is for you.
Each of these are going to fall into the Ryzen ranks again, such as:
- Ryzen 3
- Ryzen 5
- Ryzen 7
- Ryzen 9
The main show for the H-Series is the 'Ryzen 9 5980HS', with a 3Ghz base speed and a 4.8GHz boost, alongside eight cores and sixteen threads.
The main show for the U-Series is the Ryzen 7 5800U, with a 1.9GHz base speed and a 4.4GHz boost, with eight cores and sixteen threads here aplenty. AMD also boasted that this will be able to achieve 17.5 hours of battery life, but we'll wait and see how this reflects in the real-world in a laptop soon enough.

When do the Laptops Arrive?
There are a total of 13 variants of these 'Zen 3' laptop chips, all with the goal to make a laptop more efficient and much more powerful for certain needs.
The event at CES stated that they are expecting over 100 Ryzen 5000 laptops to launch from February this year, so we won't have to wait too long to upgrade.
With ARM chips now slowly gaining prominence, no less than Apple's line of laptops, it will be interesting to see how these chips stack up against others, especially in gaming.
However, we won't have long to wait, and we will aim to run through these laptops once they do launch later this year.
