Remedy Entertainment’s long awaited Alan Wake 2 will have a 60fps performance mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but the game wasn’t designed that way.
In typical Remedy fashion, Alan Wake 2 was designed to push the current-gen Xbox Series X and PS5 to their limits at 30fps. However, the development team has somehow managed to squeeze a performance mode into the title.
Revealed by Remedy Entertainment communications director Thomas Puha, Alan Wake 2 will have a performance mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X. For Xbox Series S users, the performance mode doesn’t appear to be possible due to the console’s weaker specs.
“I’m glad to say that Alan Wake 2 will have a Performance mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X,” Puha told fans. “The game has been built from the beginning as a 30fps experience focusing on visuals and ambiance, but somehow we have managed to include a solid Performance mode.”
At the time of writing, Remedy hasn’t confirmed whether or not the Alan Wake 2 performance mode hits a solid 60fps most of the time. Puha explains that Remedy is still tweaking the performance profile of the game before they reveal its final framerate.
Despite already having two performance profiles for the game, fans are already calling for another to be added. For those with 120Hz capable displays, there’s been a call for a 40fps mode to add more fluidity while not having a huge downgrade in graphical fidelity.
Alan Wake 2 has caught a lot of flack in recent months for the game’s lack of a physical release. Alongside the game’s Epic Games Store exclusivity on PC, this has soured a lot of gamers on the upcoming release, but many are still hyped for a return to Remedy’s critically acclaimed series.
Alan Wake 2 finally releases on Xbox Series, PS5 and PC on October 27, 2023.
