The PlayStation and PlayStation 2 are still incredibly popular with fans, due to their extensive libraries of beloved classics. Gaming company 8bitdo is making that nostalgia a bit easier with their new product the Retro Receiver, letting you use Sony’s classic consoles with modern controllers.
According to 8BitDo, gamers will be able to use controllers for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series on retro machines. Even Nintendo controllers can be used, as the company confirmed compatibility with the Switch Pro controller and the Wii U Pro controller. Sadly, players can’t use the massive Wii U gamepad.
Regular customers of 8BitDo will also be happy to know that a number of the company’s controllers can also be used with the Retro Receiver. From the 8bitdo Ultimate Bluetooth controller to the SN30 Pro, there’s a lot of variety here.
While the options here are pretty great, there are a few nitpicks here and there. Although 7th and 8th generation controllers work well, 6th generation controllers for the PS3 and Xbox 360 aren’t compatible. Both systems are gaining popularity with retro gamers and having support for these controllers would have been helpful.

Fans are hoping that a future firmware update will allow for PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers. Still, it is much easier to get PS4 and Xbox One controllers so this decision does make sense.
PS1 and PS2 games are still fairly popular with gamers, which is why we have so many remakes of them. Resident Evil 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy 7, and Persona 4, all of these games have been re-released in one way or another.
Despite modern accessibility, some fans want to experience the older games in their older systems. This is why the Retro Receiver is such a godsend for retro collectors.
