JoJo Rabbit and Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi is on a roll as of late. After years of non-stop hits, the New Zealand director is setting his sights on the Star Wars universe.
Despite the director’s involvement with the Star Wars universe being announced quite some time ago, next to no details have been released for the upcoming movie. There’s a good reason for that: Waititi has no idea what the movie will be about.
Taika Waititi has not written his Star Wars movie
In previous reports, industry insiders claimed that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie was quite far along. With delays hitting Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron movie, many reports believed Waititi’s film would fill in the release gap.
As it turns out, that’s simply not true, as the. Kiwi director has revealed that there’s not even a story for his film. Speaking to The Wrap, the actor, writer and director shut down rumours that the film would come out soon.
“Not this year!” Waititi said regarding the movie’s release. “I’m going to be in New Zealand from August until the end of the year with ‘Our Flag Means Death’ and ‘Time Bandits.”
The director explained that he will be actively working on the title come August. Until now, the director has been swamped with work, including writing, directing and acting in the soon-to-be-released Thor: Love and Thunder. However, now work can finally begin.
“During that time I will still be writing,” he told the outlet. “I’m still trying to figure out what the story is.”
When will the movie come out?
With everything the director is working on, it may be a few years until his mysterious Star Wars movie actually releases. With the director working numerous shows and movies as well as being an extremely popular actor, it will certainly be a while.
However, Waititi is known for his remarkably quick turnaround. Even amongst a pandemic, the director was able to pump out numerous high-quality projects, including Thor 4.
With this in mind, we’d predict a late 2024 or early 2025 release date for the movie. Of course, that’s just a guess.
