Arriving at the high asking price of $149.99, the Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma feels like an expensive investment. Why purchase it when you can go for an Xbox Elite Series 2 for just a few dollars more? Well, that's the big question, but in reality, the Wolverine V2 Chroma has a lot to offer, even with a price that will make your bank account cry.
The Wolverine V2 Chroma makes up for its high price with some lovely RGB lighting, satisfying buttons that feel great to press, and a high-quality build that feels light, but not too light. If you can find it on sale, it's certainly a must-have, but that all depends on what you need from an Xbox controller.
Razer products always have an air of premium quality to them, and the Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is no different. This Designed for Xbox controller has a deceptively simple unboxing, offering barely anything besides a couple of thumbstick caps, a lengthy 3m-long cable, and the controller itself.
However, it's clear that Razer has focused on the finer details for the Wolverine V2 Chroma. Aside from the sleek lighting bars on the outside of the controller, which look fantastic in action, everything about the controller feels excellent.
The most noticeable features are the tactile face buttons. All four of the face buttons and the directional pad use Razer's Mecha-Tactile Buttons, giving a nice clicky sound when pressed that feels responsive and satisfying to use. This quality is consistent with the six additional buttons and bumpers too, with four back paddle buttons and two extra shoulder buttons at the top.
In fact, I'd argue that these are some of the best buttons I've pressed on a controller, giving the same feedback as something like the Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro, except not as loud. It shouldn't be a surprise, considering Razer's history of mechanical switches and buttons, but I really appreciate the effort that's gone into making the Wolverine V2 Chroma feel incredible to use.
Even the thumbsticks, which snap back into place with relative ease, feel great to play with. Considering the price, I wish that the Wolverine V2 Chroma came with Hall Effect sticks for extra longevity, but it's not a huge factor - especially, when you can find the controller for below $100 now at some retailers such as Amazon.
The additional buttons and the trigger locks make it easy to see why Razer is pushing for the pro market with the Wolverine V2 Chroma, allowing you to customize and set certain inputs onto the additional buttons, but it's also just a great all-rounder. Playing games like Devil May Cry V, or the Arkham series, feels wonderful with the controller, while titles like Call of Duty and Suicide Squad showcase why its great for shooter fans.
Unfortunately, the biggest issue aside from price is the fact that the controller is wired-only. A 3m-long cable is great for those who don't mind wires lying across the floor or have a great desk setup that can make it easy to cable manage. But, considering the high price, I wish it was a wireless controller, even if I generally prefer wired controllers for my PC setup.
Thankfully, you can find the Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma for fairly cheap online. While Razer still advertises the $149.99 price on its own website, I found it easy to get a much better price with the likes of Amazon or CEX. At $75-100, I think it's a great controller, both as your primary option or for when friends come over.
The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is really satisfying to use. Razer's 'Mecha-Tactile buttons' feel incredibly fun to press and hear, while the RGB lighting adds a nice quality to the controller. It's designed exceptionally well, with the only problem being a high price and the fact it's shackled by wires. But, if you can move past those issues, it's one of the best third-party controllers when it comes to how it feels.
