Headphones a sea monster would love

Razer Kraken Ultimate gaming headset Review

When you’re slipping on a headset for your multiplayer game of choice, whether it’s Call Of Duty or Counterstrike GO, you want the sound and the voice chat to sorted straight away.

You want to be ready to play as soon as you put those headphones on, and you want to feel comfortable too. And, thankfully, The Razer Kraken Ultimate Headphones provide that exact feeling.

It’s a very comfortable headset, with a surprisingly good microphone attached. And it’s named after a sea monster… which is great, too.

These plug into the PC through USB, and they show up in the ‘Synapse’ app where you can customise them to your liking.

They’re best to just be left on the ‘default’ setting, but you can also change the RGB here in much the same way as the mouse and other Razer peripherals with Chroma Studio if you wish. They’ve got a nice glow, and won’t distract a viewer if you’re appearing through a camera on stream.

These were tested through completing the Claire scenario in Resident Evil 2 and playing through GTA: Vice City, and from start to finish they were very comfortable.

They were very comfortable

There’s also a volume control to the left of the peripheral, and it is very welcome to have a ‘mechanical’ switch to raise or lower the volume when needed. These are designed for gaming and gaming only, and the high-quality of these only proved that.

Finally, there’s a microphone attached, which slides out from the left cup! It can bend and extend in any way you wish, and it never felt to be in the way. There’s even a useful light on the end of this so you know whether it’s enabled in the app or game you’re currently using.

Hearing games, notifications and music were all taken care of here. Bass and treble sounds were as clear as could be, while the leak of any noise was minimal. This was tested when in the front room with family and no one hurled abuse while we played Jedi Academy, so it passed that test!

There’s a surround-sound feature called ‘THX Spacial Audio’, which can be turned on and off above the volume-slider. You really get the sounds of gunfire and zombies all around you when this is switched on; it’s really well done, and keeps the immersion going.

It’s really well done

There’s also the sound of the microphone. It’s noise-cancelling and is also ‘Discord-certified’, which apparently means that they pass a test when talking to a few mates over the app, especially when you’re in a game, so that’s nice. There’s also a light when the microphone is fully retracted, which is a nice touch, especially when you’re being viewed on a stream.

The only minus that could be found, could almost be a by-product of being spoiled by noise-cancelling sound. There’s none here, but with the bass and treble immersing you into a game regardless, it can be overlooked here.

Overall, the sound-quality when hearing and speaking is top-notch here; you’ve got great quality sound mixed in with very detailed spacial, immersive audio from THX.

These aren’t headphones to look for on a budget; these are the kind of headphones that you either want to treat yourself to, or to just take your streaming career seriously.

For just shy of £100 on Amazon you’re going to find these to be more than worth it, especially when you take into account the customisation of the lights, the THX spacial-sound, and ultimately the comfort.

More than worth it

There’s plenty of more expensive headphones that work great and better, but many fail at the first hurdle in comfort; you find yourself taking them off after a half-hour. These don’t have that issue, they’re always comfortable, especially during the four-hour playthrough of RE2, so in a sense, these are a bargain price for what you’re getting here.

Pros

Incredibly comfortable for long periods of gaming

Great sound, the THX surround audio feature especially

Retractable mic is a welcome feature

Cons

No noise cancellation except for the mic itself

We can’t recommend these enough. They’re very comfortable, they generate superb sound whether you’re on Discord or in a Warzone, and they have a retractable mic that you can finely place so it won’t be in your way.

They aren’t cheap, but for what they can do, they’re great value for the fantastic sound, the customisable RGB and the microphone attached.
