Nacon Revolution Unlimited Pro Controller for PS4 and PC Review

Trying out a new controller doesn’t get much more exciting than this: as soon as we first clapped eyes on the Nacon Revolution Unlimited Pro Controller, it was clear that we were looking at a high-end piece of kit which aims to be the best PS4 controller ever. Who wouldn’t want to try it out?!

If you’re looking for a new PS4 controller, perhaps after years of wearing away at the DualShock controllers that came with our PS4, this might be the exact kind of thing that you look at. But it does the Nacon Revolution Unlimited Pro Controller live up to what it says on the tin?

To help you make an informed purchase, and not just because we really wanted to get our hands on one, Stealth Optional put this snazzy controller to test…

As soon as you open the box, you know you’re in for a treat. There’s a zipped and padded case included keeping your new purchase feeling safe and treasured.

There’s a sleek USB stick that lets you access the wireless settings, and there’s also a three-metre USB-C cable (should you want to play plugged in while sitting a fair distance away from your screen).

There’s a little cloth like you’d use to clean glasses, just in case you want to wipe your controller clean at any point. And there’s also a box of little weights and sticks that allow you to alter your joysticks and redistribute weight to suit your playstyle.

It makes an immediate impression.

Having admired all the accoutrements, it’s time to pick up the controller itself. And it makes an immediate impression – the design is as slick as you could ever ask for, with textured grip everywhere that you’d want it, and nice chunky buttons that have just the right amount of push to them.

The trackpad has its own eye-catching texture, and the joystick heads have cool designs on them as well as that snazzy positioning that puts the left stick in a more convenient spot than you’d find on a DualShock.

The D-pad has a satisfying click to it, and all of the extra buttons – there are multiple switches that let you change up your settings, as well as a few customisable slots – are hidden away nicely on the rear. Put simply, it’s a beauty.

As soon as you’ve seen this controller in real life, you’ll want to get onto your PS4 as soon as possible. Luckily, once you’ve plugged in that USB stick, the controller is ready to go in seconds. Pick it up, feel the perfectly balanced weighting, and get ready for action.

We loaded up a game of FIFA 20 and this controller immediately felt intuitive to use. Manoeuvring with the sticks is nice and smooth, and all the buttons respond exactly as you’d like them too. Even the D-pad feels nice to use.

All the buttons respond exactly as you’d like them to.

The L2 and R2 triggers have a really satisfying depth and feel to them, but we’re sad to report that the L1 and R1 buttons are slightly underwhelming by comparison: they’re flat and dull, and they make an audible click every time you use them (which can get a bit irritating when you use them a lot).

Other than that, it really is hard to fault this controller. We tried it on a few different games and it always felt like a natural way to play – and the light-up ring around the right joystick never stops looking cool.

This controller also works with PC, and we even tried it on our old PS3 – it worked fine!

The RRP of the Nacon Revolution Unlimited Pro Controller is £156.30, but you don’t have to look too far to find a deal: Amazon will currently sell you one of these for £109.99, for example.

Considering that you’re getting a properly high-quality controller with heaps of customisation options, that price doesn’t seem unreasonably steep. This certainly feels like a sturdy product, and one that is far worthier of showing off than some of the cheap controllers on the market.

That being said, the idea of spending upwards of £100 on any controller will be offputting to some people. We wouldn’t say no to some further discounts.

Pros

Very luxurious unboxing process

Easy to set up

Looks and feels great

Loads of customisation options

Well worth showing off to your mates

Cons

L1 and R1 feel underwhelming

Price could be lower

Makes your older controllers look sad

If you’re looking to spend a decent amount of money on getting a really great PS4 controller, you could do a lot worse than picking this one up. It’s a lot of money to part with, sure, but we’d argue it’s a worthwhile investment.
