PS5 vs Xbox Series X sales: How many PS5 consoles have been sold, and it is more or less than Xbox sold?

This past week has already seen the launches of the next-gen, now current-gen consoles; the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X in many territories across the world.

While the UK is awaiting the launch of the PS5 next week, some eyes are already turning to the sales that both consoles have made already.

Granted, it’s not all about sales, but it’s interesting to see how they stack up in a, unique year such as 2020.

With that, let’s look into how many PS5 consoles have been sold so far, and what the projections are from Sony for its first year.

PS5 vs Xbox Series X sales

It’s important to mention that Microsoft’s gaming chief Phil Spencer has stated that there won’t be sales figures published any time soon for both the Series S/X.

He said that..”...I know it seems manipulative and I’ll apologise for that,” he says, “but I don’t want my team’s focus on [console sales]. The primary outcome of all the work that we do is how many players we see, and how often they play. That is what drives Xbox.”

However, Sony CFO Hiro Totoki also said in a investor call that the company was aiming to exceed the 7.6 million sales of the PlayStation 4’s first year.

Right now it’s far too early to tell, but there can be some speculation made in the meantime.

Has Xbox sold more than PS5?

It’s also more difficult to tell how sales can prove that Xbox is the winner here, because of GamePass.

Having the service available on PC, or through the cloud on mobile devices, can skew this, and it makes one wonder whether it’s the reason why Phil Spencer finds it more irrelevant now.

In 2013, 3.08 million Xbox one consoles were sold, which may be a help in guessing as to what the Series S/X consoles could sell by the end of this year.

We will most likely gain a better idea of firm figures in the new year, but for now anyway, as long as there’s good availability of stock for either console, both companies are going to be content with the sales figures.

What number crunching can we do in the meantime?

Although we don't have firm figures yet, there is some interesting info in the ether regarding PS5 and Xbox Series X sales stats.

In a recent Xbox Wire blog, Microsoft said the Xbox Series X/S launch has seen "More new consoles sold than any prior generation, with Xbox Series S adding the highest percentage of new players for any Xbox console at launch."

But some independent studies (like this one here) have shown that the PS5 is more in-demand than the Xbox in a lot of territories. So does that mean the PS5 will eventually win out in terms of sales?

Only time will tell who the victor is this generation in terms of units sold, but judging by the info we're seeing, both camps could end up being pretty chuffed with their results...
