The arrival of Sony’s PlayStation 5 later this year will be accompanied by a host of exciting launch games. From Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Gran Turismo 7, there’ll be loads of gorgeous-looking triple-A titles looking to make your PS5 their home.
And with these games looking set to really show off what the PS5 can do, you can bet that they’ll take up a fair whack of space. That requires a storage drive big enough to carry a multitude of gigabyte-hungry game files.
For the PlayStation 5, Sony has opted for a mega-fast custom SSD (solid state drive) for the console’s internal storage, as opposed to the PS4’s hard disk drive (HDD). This SSD will offer vastly improved performance, with lightning-fast load times. And, because SSDs have no moving parts, it’ll also be much more durable and energy efficient – and stay cooler during use.

How big will the PS5 SSD be?
The PS5’s internal SSD drive will have a capacity of 825GB.
That’s slightly less than the 1TB offered by the HDDs of the higher-spec PS4 and the PS4 Pro, but much more than the 500GB provided by the standard PS4 console. However, the PS5 also boasts the many other benefits of SSD storage mentioned above.
The PS5’s internal SSD should give you plenty of room to download and store your favourite games and apps. But if you do find yourself needing more storage, Sony has confirmed that the PS5 will support expandable storage, although you’ll need to look out for external drives with the manufacturer’s seal of approval.
