Justice League director Zack Snyder is turning his failed Star Wars pitch into a Netflix original movie: Rebel Moon. Alongside the new film, Snyder’s sci-fi epic is also getting a brand-new video game.
Revealed on The Nerd Queens podcast, Zack Snyder revealed that a Rebel Moon RPG game is in the works. With Netflix’s heavy investment in its new Netflix Gaming division, this could be the film company’s first AAA project.
Speaking on the podcast, Snyder revealed that the game is on a huge scale fitting the director’s vision. While the movie will be fans’ first introduction to his Star Wars-inspired universe, the RPG will be Snyder’s vision fully realised.
“The one thing I’m having a really good time with is, I don’t even know if I’m supposed to talk about it, is this RPG that we’re doing,” Snyder revealed. “That is just literally insane and so immersive and so intense and so huge. We talked about how we would do the game and we just said: ‘Let’s go.’”
Zack Snyder revealed that the Rebel Moon RPG game was pitched in two versions. The first was a small scale project whereas the second was a huge sprawling RPG; the director chose the latter.
“I don’t wanna do a casual [game],” the director said. “I’ve always wanted to do an RPG, but they were like, ‘We can do it this way [small scale]… or we can do it at ridiculous scale.’ I was like, ‘Go! Ridiculous scale is clearly the scale that we’re doing it!’”
Snyder explained that the new game is going to take some time to realise. The director will be helping the developers to fully realise the universe of Rebel Moon. While the filmmaker has spent years creating a new universe around his pitched Star Wars spin-off, it has to be fully developed for an RPG of this scale.
“It’s Rebel Moon completely realised,” Snyder said. “It’s really gonna be fun. Anyways, I’m not supposed to talk about it, I’m sure I’m gonna get yelled at.”
Inspired by Akira Kurosawa films, Rebel Moon was originally pitched to Lucasfilm in 2012, offering a more mature take on the franchise between the prequels and original trilogy. (Prior to the creation of Rogue One.) Since then, Snyder has retooled the story for his own sci-fi universe, introducing a gorgeously alien sci-fi design philosophy that mixes in fantasy elements far more than George Lucas’ iconic franchise.
Snyder’s films have always been known for their cinematic flair, but the director’s movies are still divisive. While Zack Snyder’s Justice League was much improved over the theatrical release, there are many that dislike his films. Also, let’s be honest, Army of the Dead was not very good.
Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon releases on Netflix on December 22nd, 2023. The film was shot alongside its sequel, Rebel Moon: Part 2, which could be released in 2024.
