Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 game engine is adopting Nvidia’s DLSS 3 frame enhancement technology. Used to massive increase resolution with minor performance impact, as well as boost framerates, DLSS 3 is the next step in the company’s impressive PC gaming tool.

Revealed during GDC 2023, Nvidia revealed that it has partnered with Epic to bring DLSS 3 to everyone. In the upcoming Unreal Engine 5.2 update, DLSS will be an easily implemented part of hundreds of games.

In a statement, vice president of engineering at Epic Games Nick Penwarden explained that DLSS’ UE5 implementation will allow developers to easily enhance visual fidelity in upcoming games.

“NVIDIA DLSS 3 introduces truly impressive frame generation technology and the Unreal Engine 5.2 plug-in will offer developers a great choice for increased quality and performance of their games,” Penwarden said.

DLSS 3 in Unreal Engine 5 will allow developers to take advantage of multiple image enhancement techniques in their games. DLSS Super Resolution to increase visual fidelity, Frame Generation to improve framerates and DLAA to take care of jagged edges are all included.

Since it’s initial release in 2018, Nvidia’s deep learning supersampling technology has been implemented in almost 300 programs and games. However, the software has mostly been praised for its ability to make games far more performant for Nvidia GPU users.

Some high-profile releases that take advantage of Nvidia DLSS include Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered which combines the experience with RTX ray-tracing and shadows to deliver a true next-gen experience.

Unreal Engine 5.2 with DLSS 3 plug-ins currently doesn’t have an official release date. However, we expect the software to be released in the coming months.
