Embracer Group has announced that they will be releasing five The Lord of the Rings game by March 2024. Alongside the often-delayed Gollum title releasing this year, a slew of unannounced projects are in the works. That’s a lot of Middle-earth content in a year, even for fans of Tolkien.

Announced during Embracer Group’s Q3 2022 report, it turns out four of the five games have already been revealed. Gollum aside, we also have The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, a new Middle-earth game from Wētā workshop, and an untitled free-to-play card game. This means there is still one mystery title that hasn’t been announced.

“In the quarter, Freemode closed the previously announced acquisition of Middle-earth Enterprises. For Freemode, this acquisition has generated a lot of interest among both internal and external partners for The Lord of the Rings IP across different media formats. There are currently five games in production by external partners to be released in financial year 2023/24.
There is also one film in production by an external partner. Freemode continues to make selective key recruitments in various parts of its business to strengthen the organization.”

It will be interesting to see what this unannounced The Lord of the Rings game is going to be. With remasters and re-releases becoming a trend, many of us would love to see EA’s Two Towers and Return of the King games re-released. There are also fans who want to see the return of Lord of the Rings: Conquest and Lord of the Rings: War in the North.

Expect something new and original, which we definitely aren’t against. After all, the Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War games are pretty great, even if they have really weak stories.

Whatever happens, it’s clear that Embracer Group has a lot of hot IPs to play with. In addition to The Lord of the Rings games, the company recently purchased Eidos and Crystal Dynamics from Square Enix. This means they now own properties like Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain.
