The Elder Scrolls 6 might include a multiplayer mode, a first for the popular fantasy RPG series. While the series does have multiplayer in its MMO spin-off The Elder Scrolls Online, this marks the first time that Bethesda has included official multiplayer in its single-player franchise.

According to the Zenimax job listing, Bethesda is looking for an Associate Level Designer that has “strong familiarity with a variety of open-world multiplayer games." In addition to that, this Level Designer also needs “experience with The Elder Scrolls Construction Set."

The Elder Scrolls Construction Set is a collection of tools used to create games in the fantasy series. Used across Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, the tools are used to create maps, quests and more.

Many believe that this could be a listing for The Elder Scrolls Online. However, considering ESO uses a proprietary engine and not the Creation Engine’s Construction Set, there’s a good chance that we can see some form of multiplayer in The Elder Scrolls 6 when it comes out.

Fans weary of this development might not have to worry since Bethesda did say that the next entry in The Elder Scrolls would be single-player. However, it’s also worth pointing out that Bethesda used similar wording for Fallout 76, claiming fans could play it solo or with friends.

Considering how single-player oriented the series’ fanbase is, we wouldn’t be surprised if The Elder Scrolls 6 multiplayer is something minor. This can range to certain quests having co-op features or something akin to Dark Souls, where “ghosts” of players can assist you. We’ll have to wait and see but don’t expect this to be a major mechanic.

Plus, it wouldn’t make sense to have a big multiplayer mode since The Elder Scrolls Online is still being supported. That game’s player base is massive and we doubt Bethesda would want to scrap this title, given how many are subscribed to it. Knowing that TESO uses an old-school subscription service minimizes the effect this multiplayer mode could have.

Still, it will be interesting to see just how The Elder Scrolls 6 is going to use multiplayer. Hopefully, we get more details on this game once Starfield is released because we’ve seen nothing since that logo reveal years ago.
