As development on the sci-fi epic Starfield finally winds down, Bethesda Game Studios is already starting development on The Elder Scrolls VI. While the fantasy RPG has been in its early stages for almost five years, we now have confirmation that it’s in active development.
After news that Todd Howard regrets announcing the new Elder Scrolls game alongside Starfield in 2018, the now-Xbox exclusive roleplaying game is being properly worked on as Starfield’s development wraps up. Yes, Starfield DLC is still in the works, but the bulk of work on the game is now over.
In an interview with Spanish website Vandal, Bethesda Softworks’ head of communication Pete Hines confirmed that the next Elder Scrolls game is actively being worked on at the studio. However, it is still in an early state as Starfield patches, DLC and other post-launch support are still the studio’s prime focus.
“We have all our studios focused on making this game the best it can be,” Hines told the outlet. “And yes, there are people working on The Elder Scrolls VI, but this is what the studio has focused on. So no, at no time early are you going to hear about The Elder Scrolls VI at all. Starfield is our focus for now, and it will continue to be our priority for a while before we talk about anything else.”
However, when asked if the fantasy game is finally in development, Hines confirmed the title is being worked on.
“It is in [active] development, but it is in early development.”
The Elder Scrolls VI was revealed half-a-decade ago alongside Starfield at E3 2018. However, with two years of delays to fix Starfield bugs and improve its graphics, the game has been appropriately pushed back.
As potentially Todd Howard’s last Elder Scrolls title, all eyes are pinned on the game being the ultimate fantasy RPG. Following the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3 and the hype for Obsidian’s Avowed, the excitement for the next Elder Scrolls game cannot be understated.
Elder Scrolls VI doesn’t have an official release date at the time of writing, but it’s expected to release between 2026 and 2028 on Xbox and PC.
