Star-Lord T'Challa was going to have a spin-off show before Boseman's passing

The second episode of Marvel's What If...? introduced fans to Star-Lord T'Challa. Originating from a universe where King T'Challa was kidnapped by The Ravagers instead of Peter Quill, the space-faring Wakandan instantly became a fan-favourite. With his united universe, the character had unlimited potential.

It appears that Marvel also realised the potential for Star-Lord T’Challa to grow. As it turns out, Marvel wanted to pursue a follow-up series focusing entirely on the character. However, with the unfortunate passing of Chadwick Boseman, the series won't be happening.

Star-Lord T’Challa won't appear again

In an interview with Variety, director Bryan Andrews explained that Boseman’s final recordings were just months before his passing. The director revealed that the actor adored playing the fun, quippy version of T’ Challa.

Andrews explained:

"Chadwick had recorded his Star Lord T’Challa stuff early. But we had those later episodes that he appeared in sporadically, and it was a long stretch before we got him [again]. And it was not long after the final recording that he passed. I think it was maybe just a few months, or a month. None of us knew, obviously. But we got him in time to have everything [for Season 1]. I think he was also trying to make an effort because T’Challa was so important to him – and also this new version of Star Lord T’Challa was so important to him. He dug it.”

With that said, it's obvious why Marvel would want to create more with the character. However, Boseman never got to know that the company wanted do create a series focusing just on the spin-off. Furthermore, that series might never happen with Boseman gone.

“I don’t know if he knew this, but there was planning to have Star Lord T’Challa spin off into his own show with that universe and crew. We were all very excited. We know he would have loved it, too. And then, you know, he passed, and so all that’s in limbo. So, who knows? Maybe one day.”

What If...? Season 2

Marvel has already announced that What If...? will receive a second season. However, the series will not focus on the already established Guardians of the Multiverse. Well, actually, we will see at least one of them return.

Outside of What If...? Gamora killed Thanos, which was originally part of this season, every story will be new. There are no hints as to whether or not the second series will result in a similar team up finale, but it wouldn't be surprising.
