Square Enix has released the first trailer for their NFT project, Symbiogenesis, and it looks like a whole lot of nothing. That’s not even sarcasm as the trailer doesn’t really show off anything to entice anyone in this “project.”
The 44-second trailer mostly shows a bunch of grasslands before attempting to get fans hooked with a message that says “Untangle The Story.” Considering that we don’t even know what the story is or if there is a story in the first place, it’s clear that the company has failed with its first piece of footage.
According to a Twitter post from Kars, Symbiogenesis will launch its website this month for more details. The Square Enix project will supposedly have 10,000 NFT characters, presumably for players to buy and “collect.” These characters could include memorable faces from Final Fantasy and more.
Unsurprisingly, most fans are disappointed in Square Enix for pursuing this NFT project. Despite how disappointing it is, this is far from a huge surprise as the company has been pursuing NFTs for the longest time. While the company’s previous blockchain-obsessed president has left, his replacement is still interested in Web3 implementation.
Square Enix went in hard on NFTs when the craze pretty much died down. The company ended up selling Eidos and Crystal Dynamics to make money for the craze. Yes, the company gave away Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and the Soul Reaver series, among other things, to work on whatever Symbiogenesis is.
Despite the company’s weird commitment to getting Web3, Square Enix has released some solid games recently. Octopath Traveller 2 has gained plenty of positive reviews for improving on the first game’s weaknesses. We also got solid entries in the Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile franchises, even if they didn’t set the world on fire.
No release date for this Symbiogenesis project has been revealed but expect more information soon.
