Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2 feature the iconic symbiote Venom as its title villain, but the sentient alien goo won’t be attached to Eddie Brock.
Revealed during Geoff Keighley’s underwhelming Summer Games Fest, Spider-Man 2’s villain will be a different host that many fans expected. But who will it be?
Speaking on stage at Summer Games Fest 2023, Insomniac Games’ creative director Brian Intihar confirmed that the Symbiote villain has a different host in this new superhero adventure.
Spider-Man 2 does appear to be a radically different retelling of the Symbiote Suit storyline than we’ve ever seen before. While the story does take some pre-exiting notes — the Symbiote appears to be an Oscorp creation similar to Ultimate Spider-Man comics — the playground is completely different.
For example, Peter Parker and Miles Morales are both active heroes by the time the former gets his iconic black suit. Furthermore, as previously mentioned, Eddie Brock is not the second host of the alien Symbiote — as most storylines usually result in.
Judging from clues laid in the first Insomniac Spider-Man game, it seems that Harry Osborn is the host of the Venom Symbiote, a storyline found in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. Furthermore, the post-credits scene for Miles Morales showed Osborn in a tank surrounded by the symbiote.
Nevertheless, there could be some form of twist around the corner when it comes to Insomniac’s use of the symbiote. With the studio being unusually coy around who the host of the alien is, Harry Osborn might not be the true villain by the end of the new game.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is expected to release on PlayStation 5 on October 20th, 2023. The game is also expected to release on PC sometime in the future.
