Sony Santa Monica just released God of War Ragnarök to critical acclaim, and fans are already excited to see what they do next. Interestingly enough, it seems the studio is content with sticking to the God of War series, at least for the time being.

Considering the various lore and mythologies that Kratos can slice through, there’s a lot of mileage in staying with the PlayStation franchise. Of course, Sony Santa Monica has to keep the gameplay fresh and exciting as fans grew tired of the original series when God of War Ascension hit the PS3.

Will Sony Santa Monica keep making God of War games? Especially after the success of God of War Ragnarök? Or will they make new IPs for PlayStation to market in the near future?

During an interview with the LA Times, God of War Ragnarök director Eric Williams revealed that Sony Santa Monica is okay with constantly making games for the series. Furthermore, Williams says there is no shame in a studio dedicating its time to the God of War series.

“I remember talking to someone from another game company, where they were trying to get me to leave,” Williams recalled. “They said, ‘Do you just want to be known as the God of War guy for the rest of your life?’ That was your big pitch to dissuade me? Because yes, I kind of do.”

Funnily enough, Sony Santa Monica has mostly made God of War games for most of its inception. Everything from the original game on PS2 to the continuation on PS4 and PS5 has been under Sony Santa Monica.

Although Williams doesn’t mind staying on this path, Ragnarök creative director Cory Balrog did say that the studio is “spread out on a lot of different things.” Balrog didn’t clarify what all of those “different things” are. There were reports that the studio was working on a new game set in space but that was canceled.
