After years of being absent from the console platform, Roblox may finally make its PlayStation debut with a new Roblox PS5 port. An eight-year Xbox exclusive, PlayStation is now hoping to bring the incredibly popular gaming platform to its family of consoles.

Revealed in 2022 documents exposed in the recent FTC vs Microsoft trial, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan expressed desire for a Roblox PS5 port to bring the platform’s 66 million players over to the PlayStation market.

Ryan explained that internal policies inside PlayStation blocked Roblox from coming to the console. Due to the console market’s high number of child users, PlayStation believed Roblox’s microtransactions and internal moderation were harmful for kids.

However, with the platform blasting 250 million monthly active users, PlayStation has to decide to review and relax its restrictions in order to allow a PS5 port of the game whenever Roblox decides to develop it.

“Historically, because of the large number of children that play on the PlayStation, we have been very careful with regards to opening them up to anything that could potentially exploit them," Ryan said. “Over the last couple of years, however, we have reviewed those policies and relaxed a little on this," he continued. "We have been conservative for too long, and now we are currently engaging with people at Roblox. We hope that the situation will change."

Rumours have circulated surrounding a Roblox PS5 port in the past year. Job listings for a PlayStation version of the game have gone live, but we have yet to see any official announcements regarding a release on the platform.

Despite PlayStation’s insistence on protecting children through its past blocking of Roblox, the game’s massive audience is aging up. With hundreds of millions of players, the free-to-play service isn’t just for kids, even if it appears so at first glance.

Roblox itself has attempted to circumvent this child-focused appeal in the past weeks. Adults who use the service are now able to play “17+ Games” which can include extreme violence, nudity and mature themes.

A Roblox PS5 port would make sense for both the game and PlayStation. With such a wide audience that can play on PC, phones, tablets or even Xbox, there’s no reason for PlayStation not to support it.

Roblox is available to play for free on Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, Mac, ChromeOS, Android and iOS.
