Pokémon developers Game Freak were working on an unreleased PS4 game before it was canceled for reasons that haven’t been revealed. It’s a shame as the company has made a number of interesting games outside of its most well-known property, so this is a huge shame.
Twitter user @bogorad222 found proof that Game Freak was working on something for the PS4 before it was canceled for unknown reasons. What makes this interesting is that this would have been some time after the releases of Pokémon Sun and Moon on 3DS.
Sadly, all we know about this PS4 game from the Pokémon developers is that it's eight years old and would have been released around 2016 or 2017. It would be easy to assume that the releases of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the main reasons why but we’ll never know.
Before this, Game Freak did make a number of original IPs for a number of systems. GBA owners will remember how the developers made the fan-favorite sidescroller Drill Dozer. On 3DS, they also made the eShop title HarmoKnight, which even featured music from Pokémon. They also recently made Little Town Hero, which came out on PS4 and Switch.
Even with the release of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the company is still working on other games. It was recently revealed that they would be working on a new game called Project Bloom, which looks bigger than anything the company has made.
Despite all of this, the company will always be known for Pokémon and its doubtful that they will ever leave the franchise. After all, despite working on a new title, Game Freak is also working on DLC for Scarlet and Violet. We finally got the Pokémon HOME update people have been waiting for, so there’s hope that news on the DLC will be coming soon.
Nintendo Switch fans can pick up Pokémon Scarlet and Violet right now. They can also pick up Little Town Hero if they want to try other Game Freak titles, though they can play better games from them like Tembo the Badass Elephant.
