Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is coming out this year but fans would rather play the older entries. Thanks to Xbox’s backwards compatibility, numerous titles from the 360 era have quickly become bestsellers again.
A report from Gamesindustry.biz revealed that a number of older CoD titles quickly topped the UK gaming charts. Both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 were some of the best-selling games last month.
The report credits the recent Xbox Ultimate Game Sale for these shooters topping the charts again. Modern Warfare 2 (2009) could be purchased for £12.49, while Black Ops 2 was even cheaper at £11.99.
Since modern Xbox Series systems have stellar backwards compatibility, these older CoD entries stayed relevant to many players. Microsoft also fixed the matchmaking of these Xbox 360-era Call of Duty games recently, leading to a huge surge in online play for these titles.
With the recent Modern Warfare and Warzone titles taking up more than 100 GB on consoles, it’s easy to see why players went back to the older games. Both Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and Black Ops 2 are often seen as the best titles in the franchise. Fixing the matchmaking also helped bring back a ton of these older players to Xbox.
PlayStation knows just how lucrative the Call of Duty series is, as the company signed a 10-year deal with Microsoft to continue bringing these games to PS5. Sadly, the PS5 isn’t backwards compatible with PS3 games, so older players can’t replay the previous entries online. While there are remastered versions of the first two Modern Warfare games, the second one didn’t have online play.
Nintendo is also getting in on the action, as Activision Blizzard promised to bring these games to their systems. During the acquisition lawsuit, it was also revealed that new CoD games would be coming to Switch 2 and not the current Nintendo hardware.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is coming out on November 10 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC. Fans that want to play Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and Black Ops 2 can get them on either Xbox Series or PC.
