Nintendo Switch Is Losing Its Twitter Sharing Functionalities

Nintendo announced that it will discontinue integration for X, formerly known but actually still mostly referred to as Twitter, and social media integration for the friend suggestions feature on the Nintendo Switch.

The changes will come into effect on June 10, with this decision impacting various services across the Nintendo Switch platform, making it harder to share your sick players on Smash Bros Ultimate.

Revealed via social media, perhaps the most notable of changes, as we've mentioned, includes the discontinuation of the feature for posting screenshots and videos to Twitter directly from the album of images and clips stored in your Nintendo Switch, which can be easily accessed via the Home menu. While posting to Facebook will still be available for the time being, it may also face discontinuation in the future.

Posting to social media isn't the only thing changing, If you're a Smash Ultimate player who for some reason still uses the Smash World smartphone app you won't also be able to upload screenshots to this service as well.

Features in Splatoon 3 and Splatoon 2 will also undergo adjustments, with some bizarre limitations set in place, any content shared via the mailbox in Splatsville, Inkopolis Plaza, or Inkopolis Square won't be able to be shared to Twitter or Facebook, allowing users to share them in-game without requiring a social media account linked.

Furthermore, the feature for sending friend requests to social media friends through the Friend Suggestions menu on the Switch will no longer be available. However, players can still utilise the friend suggestions feature through smart devices, Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U.

Nintendo isn't the only company that has removed the ability to easily share content on social media, particularly Twitter. Early in 2023, Microsoft announced that Twitter sharing features were being removed from Xbox consoles. That was followed by Sony later that same year, confirming PlayStation users had lost access to the Twitter sharing functionality as well.

Although the reason behind this decision was not shared, it is highly likely that it's due to the exorbitant API price hikes that the company implemented in 2023.

For Xbox and PlayStation users, it's been a small nuisance at worst, as both systems have a relatively functional companion app on smartphones that allows players to download clips and screenshots they take from their consoles. Nintendo's app, on the other hand, is an obsolete, clunky mess that's virtually useless and doesn't have sharing features of any kind.

The process to directly download screenshots and clips from the Switch to your phone is so cumbersome that it might likely turn most people off from sharing content online, sadly, as you either need to remove the SD and transfer your files to a PC, or go through an obnoxious process of pairing your phone with the console, using a QR code to generate a download link and manually downloading each file you want to share.
