Metroid Dread dev has two surprise games in the works

After releasing the brilliant Metroid Dread on Nintendo Switch, developer Mercury Steam is going full steam ahead on two new unannounced games. But is the developer working on a follow-up to its aforementioned platformer?

Nordisk Games, which owns a stake in MercurySteam, let the news slip in its most recent financial report. In the report, it was revealed that the Metroid Dread dev is simultaneously working on two unannounced titles, presumably for the Nintendo Switch 2.

While not many details were released regarding the games, they were both described as “large” experiences. This could mean that the studio is working on another Nintendo project, but also literally anything else.

Via TwistedVoxel, one of the two Mercury Steam games is already known. While currently untitled, the Metroid Dread developer is working on a dark fantasy title created with a third-person perspective. The game is currently set to be published by 505 Games.

At the time of writing, Mercury Steam’s Metroid game is their most recent release. The side-scrolling action game is also the studio’s highest rated release with an 88 on Metacritic. 2010’s Castlevania: Lord of Shadows comes second with a Metacritic score of 85.

With Metroid Prime 4 delayed indefinitely, Dread was a welcome return to form for the beloved Nintendo series. While it didn’t reach the financial success of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it still performed well for the series, becoming the fastest selling game in the franchise.

While many fans hope that Mercury Steam will create a follow-up to Dread, others hope that the developers will be given access to more Nintendo franchises. With Retro Studios currently working on Prime 4, could Mercury Steam create a worthy sequel to the unbeatable Donkey Kong Country Returns?

In our opinion, maybe it’s worth giving Mercury Steam the StarFox franchise. After a decade of poor sequels and spin-offs, the Dread developers might be able to finally turn the series around with a brand-new entry. Wouldn’t that be lovely?
