Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake‘s classic voice actors return is disingenuous

Konami’s recently revealed Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake has been advertised as bringing back the series’ iconic voice actors for this new version. However, it turns out that claim may be a tad disingenuous.

While the upcoming remake will, in fact, have all of the original voice actors in their roles, that’s only because no new lines are being recorded. Instead, the upcoming Snake Eater remake will be reusing audio from the original game.

Speaking to The Verge, Konami’s American Head of Communications Tommy Williams explained that the game’s original recordings are being used in lieu of new recordings for the remade video game.

In recent remakes, such as Resident Evil 4 Remake, Dead Space Remake or even Final Fantasy VII, entirely new recordings have been done to tell a more modernised story. With revised scripts, these remakes are often able to elevate their stories above their original versions.

However, Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake appears to not be doing any of that. While major gameplay changes may occur, the script and dialogue is planned to be identical, and there’s a reason behind that.

With numerous Japanese and English voice actors for the game now sadly deceased, Konami isn’t willing to recast anyone for the new remake. In many ways, it’s to be expected, as the remake’s slightly changed title hints at the game’s structure being identical to the original.

The new title, Metal Gear Solid Delta, refers to the “change or difference without changing structure”. As such, the new remake is likely to be exactly the same, unless areas are cut from the original.

There’s still a lot that’s unknown about Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake. However, we do know this: the graphics are improved, the gameplay is tweaked, and original creator Hideo Kojima isn’t involved in any way whatsoever.

Nevertheless, the new Metal Gear Solid game is likely to be quite a good game when it releases. If it does indeed stick close to the original source material, it’ll likely be a new slap of paint on an already fantastic game.

Sure, it might not be as good as Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, but it’s still going to be a banger.
