Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has the not-so-envious task of attempting to one-up its acclaimed predecessor in both gameplay and story. Insomniac promises that the new story sees a lot of “juicy drama” will be happening to poor Peter Parker.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, senior narrative director Jon Paquette talked up the personal drama Peter will be going through. Since Peter is going to be the symbiote’s host, his overly aggressive attitude will have a major effect on his supporting cast.

"It's the loved ones and the family around the host who has to see what's happening to the person that they love," Paquette adds. "There's a lot of juicy drama that we can get from that."

Although the symbiote story is a familiar one, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 tries something different by having Peter involved in Venom’s creation. Senior creative director Bryan Intihar says Peter is going to play a huge part in the way Venom turns out.

"We wanted to try something very different, and I don't think you can get much more different from Doc Ock than you do Venom," Intihar explains. "It's about power, it's about strength, it's about being slighted, it's about Peter being involved much more in the creation of Venom. I think that's what attracted us."

Based on these comments, it seems that the game’s story is going to be darker and much more serious. Despite similarities to the janky Spider-Man 3 movie game, the mystery of Harry’s illness and the symbiote affecting Peter’s personal life could provide good drama.

Gameplay-wise, the recent trailer gave fans a lot to be hopeful for. Switching between Peter and Miles should provide a decent amount of variety. Combat and traversing also look more fun, which is saying a lot since the first game did those aspects well.
