Lucasfilm hires deepfake artist who 'improved' Skywalker's Mandalorian CGI

Lucasfilm has hired a deepfake artist who fixed the CGI appearance of Luke Skywalker in the most recent season of The Mandalorian. After a wealth of negative feedback from fans over Skywalker's appearance, the artist improved the uncanny visuals in a viral video.

The Saga Continues

The iconic Star Wars character appeared at the end of the second season. The reveal was part of a storyline that involved Grogu leaving with Luke to train to use The Force. It’s likely we'll see Luke again in Season 3. If the iconic hero does return, it would make sense for Lucasfilm to improve his digital look.

Considering how The Mandalorian could tie in with the further Star Wars universe, and with numerous other projects in the works, it’s likely we could see the return of numerous classic characters.

Lucasfilm invests in Deepfake

The Youtuber, Shamook, uploaded a video at the end of last year which changed Luke’s look in The Mandalorian. Using Deepfake technology, Shamook created a more realistic render of Luke. His face not only looks a lot closer to a younger Luke, but the animations also appear much smoother.

This work caught the attention of someone at Lucasfilm as the company hired the artist earlier this year. Shamook confirmed his change in role on his most recent videos, posting in the comments section.

“As some of you may already know, I joined ILM/Lucasfilms a few months ago and haven't had the time to work on any new YouTube content. Now I've settled into my job, uploads should start increasing again. They'll still be slow, but hopefully not months apart. Enjoy!”

Shamook confirmed his job title on his latest video with a commenter who asked, stating that he is now a “Senior Facial Capture Artist.” With so many projects in development, it’s likely Shamook’s talents will be put into action straight away.
