Lord of the Rings prequels for Gandalf, Gollum, more in the works

Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings is one of the best movie trilogies of all time. As the best adaptation fans could’ve asked for, it’s been well known that any remake of the films would be despised.

However, while remakes may be off the table, spin-off movies are prime for the taking. As it turns out, a number of potential spin-offs are already being planned.

Lord of the Rings spin-offs in the works

Following the franchise’s acquisition by media empire Embracer Group, new The Lord of the Rings movies are in the works. As soon as the franchise was purchased, Embracer revealed plans to make more films in the series.

Instead of being based on existing books like The Simarillion, these new movies will adapt obscure pieces of lore. This means that fans will see new canon stories, similar to the Middle Earth games from Warner Bros.

Most importantly, Embracer revealed that its new spin-offs will be focused around existing characters. However, they will be origin stories, such as the early life of Gandalf the Grey or Aragorn.

Additionally, other storylines may be created that are based around short passages in books. For example, the video game War in the North was an extension of a short passage. This could be the direction Embracer takes in the future.

“I am truly excited to have The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, one of the world’s most epic fantasy franchises join the Embracer family, opening up more transmedia opportunities including synergies across our global group," said CEO Lars Wingefors.

"[We will explore] other opportunities [like] exploring additional movies based on iconic characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Gollum, Galadriel, Eowyn and other characters from the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and continue to provide new opportunities for fans to explore this fictive world through merchandising and other experiences."

Will this ruin Rings of Power?

With Embracer Group’s acquisition of The Lord of the Rings, many are worried that Amazon’s new series will be ruined. However, it looks like Amazon’s existing deal will go unbroken.

With multiple seasons of Rings of Power being announced, Embracer will be supporting the series. Additionally, as the most expensive Amazon series yet, its success might have major benefits for the franchise.
