Genshin Impact is one of the most successful free-to-play games currently available, making billions of dollars since its release. However, voice actors who have worked on the game claimed they haven’t been paid for a number of months.

Corina Boettger, the voice of Paimon, says she is owed thousands of dollars by miHoYo. The voice actor believes this wouldn’t have happened if the project was created under a union. Elaborating, Boettger says she isn’t sure if this is the fault of miHoYo or recording studio Formosa but this shouldn’t be happening.

“Again... been working for MONTHS unpaid on a BIG project for a studio,” Boettger said on Twitter. “I am owed THOUSANDS of dollars. I am struggling currently to pay rent because of this. This project has made BILLIONS. This project should be Union.”

Brandon Winckler, a supporting actor in Genshin Impact, hasn’t been paid in four months and has sent five emails about it. Winckler has since stated that he won’t be working on the game unless it has a union contract.

“With all that said, I personally won't be working on this game anymore unless it goes under a Union contract,” Winckler tweeted out. “I don't have much to lose from this choice - and if I'm lucky, I hope others will at least see where I'm coming from with that choice. I'm sorry to be so negative. UGH.”

Ever since launching in 2020, Genshin Impact has been one of the most profitable free-to-play games. To this day, it’s praised for being a playable single-player experience, with money only being a factor in getting certain characters.

The popularity of this and Honkai: Star Rail has led to rumours of a Star Wars game from miHoYo. Furthermore, the studio has gotten so big that it has now expanded with a metaverse studio in Singapore.
