Final Fantasy 16 might have strong overall reviews but the game has received a mixed reception from fans. Despite the game not selling well in Japan, Square Enix maintains that sales for the PS5 exclusive are “extremely strong.”

In a statement released to IGN, Square Enix maintains that the 16th installment in its iconic JRPG franchise is doing really well. Due to the PlayStation 5 not having an install base as strong as the PlayStation 4, Square feels comparing it to Final Fantasy 7 Remake isn’t fair.

“Square Enix considers the initial sales results of Final Fantasy 16 to be extremely strong, and we will continue to carry out a wide range of initiatives to encourage even more people to play the game,” the statement said.

While that statement might sound like the company is moving its own goalpost, there might be some credence to this. After all, it was mentioned that there are talks to make DLC for the game after a mostly positive reception.

Many hardcore fans of the series feel this installment has strayed too far from what makes a “proper” Final Fantasy. Although the Devil May Cry-like combat is liked, some fans feel the lack of proper JRPG mechanics is a weakness. There is even a section of fans who prefer Stranger of Paradise over Final Fantasy 16.
