Breakdown

  • Dragon's Dogma 2 is too powerful for the Steam Deck
  • Various tests have been done to get the game in a playable state
  • Steam Deck owners will keep finding ways to make this game play better

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a true next-gen RPG, with stunning locations, massive monsters, and a whole open-world that players can make their own. However, this does come at a cost, as the Capcom RPG is too powerful for Valve’s Steam Deck, so handheld play won’t be an option for now.

RPG Site attempted to play the game on Deck and found out the hard way that this sequel just isn’t made for these handheld PCs. Because the game demands an obscene amount of RAM, needing 13GB while the handheld only has 5GB, it is constantly plagued with performance issues. The report states that frames drop to 15 FPS and lower, showing how much of a powerhouse Capcom’s latest effort is.

This probably won’t stop Steam Deck users from attempting to play Dragon’s Dogma 2 on Valve’s handheld, since various plug-ins can make it more bearable. Still, when compared to most games that are declared “Unsupported,” fans may want to give up on this and play the game on a high-end PC or current-gen console.

Fans had a feeling that this RPG would push current-gen systems to their limit, as the PS5 and Xbox Series versions are stuck at 30 FPS. While the game can go above 60 FPS on consoles, it does lead to some performance drops and various other issues, even on strong computers. It will be interesting to see if this eventually gets a Steam Deck patch, but we’ll wait and see.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 just came out and has some of the highest scores we’ve seen from the current gaming generation. Capcom fans were already big fans of the first game, which many felt was an underrated gem, which is why it’s satisfying to see the sequel do so well. This is another major win for Capcom, who continue to be on a roll with their game releases.

It was a long wait but Dragon’s Dogma 2 is readily available on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
