Deadpool 3 is integral to MCU X-Men’s introduction, teases Feige

Ever since the conception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have been expecting the return of the X-Men. After a decade of waiting, that’s just around the corner, but fans will have to wait for Deadpool 3 first.

In a new interview, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased that the upcoming merc-with-a-mouth sequel will be integral to the MCU X-Men. But what does this mean for fans?

Does Deadpool 3 introduce the X-Men?

In a video interview with Deadline Hollywood, Feige was asked about the X-Men’s appearance in the MCU. At the time of writing, it’s known that the mutant superhero team will come to the MCU at some point, but not when.

It’s suggested that the X-Men will either arrive in or after Phase 5, presumably following Secret Wars. With the end of the Incursion likely triggering an explosion in mutant genetics, this could explain a mass arrival of mutants in the cinematic universe.

However, Feige has now suggested that the upcoming Deadpool 3 will be integral to the introduction of mutants. While some mutants do exist in the MCU — Black Widow introduced the first one — they’re rather rare characters. However, with Wolverine’s appearance in the new Deadpool flick, there’s space to bring in more.

When asked when the X-Men are coming, Feige responded:

“That's what Jennifer Walters just asked the robot in the final episode of She-Hulk. And I'll give you the same answer that he gave, which was, I don't remember, no answer, I think was what he gave, yes. But Deadpool and Wolverine, you know, we're getting close."

Young Avengers come first

While many are excited for the arrival of X-Men characters, Feige was quick to note that there’s an entire arc planned first. Instead of immediately bringing the X-Men into the fold, Marvel will focus on the Young Avengers.

As set up in Phase 4, characters like Black Widow (Yelena), Hawkeye (Kate Bishop), Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Shang-Chi, Ironheart and more will take the spotlight. These characters are expected to be the heroes of arc such as Secret Invasion before maturing to battle in Secret Wars and The Kang Dynasty.

Furthermore, Marvel has yet to introduce the Fantastic Four to the MCU, an essential move for Secret Wars. After that, then the X-Men will arrive.
