Cyberpunk 2077's 1.2 patch will improve last-gen performance

CD Projekt Red released details of its upcoming 1.2 patch for Cyberpunk 2077 today, and it looks like last-gen consoles will receive a big performance boost.

Players had initially guessed the patch would arrive in March, with the last Friday of the month being the general consensus for when the patch might release.

The patch didn’t release on Friday, but CD Projekt Red released the full patch list of fixes today. It’s a big list of fixes and improvements, but we’re here for one reason, and one reason only, performance fixes.

Performance in Cyberpunk 2077 has been a problem since launch, especially for those playing on last-gen consoles like the base PS4 and Xbox One. PC players with weaker hardware have also had issues running the title.

Performance improvements

Right from the off, CD Projekt Red is keen to point out that the improvements will affect all platforms, but the biggest changes will be seen across “last generation consoles and lower performance machines”.

The 1.2 patch will bring “improved stability and performance” in Cyberpunk 2077’s engine, which should reduce the number of crashes. Improvements in memory optimisation and management should also reduce the overall number of crashes during gameplay.

CD Projekt Red worked on several optimisations across shadows, shaders, physics, animations, facial animations and the occlusion system. Hopefully resulting in a much smoother experience for players across all platforms.

Last-gen Performance

At launch, Cyberpunk 2077 ran poorly on the base PS4 and Xbox One. Both versions had a dynamic resolution that would sit between 720p and 900p, while the frame performance sat around 20-25FPS.

The game performed so poorly that Sony issued refunds to those who requested them and took the game off the digital storefront. There’s been no word from Sony or CD Projekt Red about when the game may return, although the 1.2 performance patch might improve performance enough for the game to return.

There're no details on when the patch will release, only that players can “expect it soon”.
