Chrono Trigger Remake allegedly in the works

Square continues the remake trend of the last few years with a rumoured Chrono Trigger Remake project. According to several leaks which have been making the rounds lately, the seminal time-travel JRPG could be making its way to modern systems.

The latest rumour comes from frequent leaker Zippo, who says Square have a HD-2D remake in the works (much like the Dragon Quest 3 remake), ready to be revealed.

Naturally, it is better to take such leaks with a grain of salt, but there are corroborating rumours for the Chrono Trigger Remake.

According to another leaker, Pyoro, the next Nintendo Direct will see the announcement of a remake of a "SNES classic". And well, what could qualify more for that title than Chrono Trigger on the Switch?

The iconic JRPG follows the adventures of Crono, Marle, Lucca and their band of friends as they traveled around time and fought their battle against the parasite Lavos. The game also features a unique battle system, "Active Time Battle", which mixes real time and turn-based combat that debuted Final Fantasy IV.

We have recently reported that Square Enix is also gearing up to release a Star Ocean 2 remake, which should be announced soon. Perhaps, that could sound like too many announcements at once, even for a company as busy as Square Enix.

Chrono Trigger, originally designed by the dream team of Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama, is often considered to be one of the best 16-bit RPGs of all time. Released in March of 1995 for the Super Nintendo, it has been then be made available for other platforms such as the Nintendo DS, Sony PlayStation and even mobile.

At the moment, it is not possible to play Chrono Trigger on any current generation consoles, so that might definitely be a very good reason for Square to hurry up with their remake. As for us, we can't wait to go back once again to the Millennial Fair and do some karaoke with Robo.
